What is calisthenics?
Calisthenics is a team sport unique to Australia. Bringing together aspects dancing and gymnastic techniques and apparatus, choreographed to music and presenting these routines on stage at competitions in costumes. It encourages strength development, self-discipline, team spirit and coordination. At Crown Calisthenics College girls in addition to team items are able to compete in Solo and Duo items.
When are classes?
Classes are held weekly. Please see our Classes page for details.
What do I wear to class?
A black leotard is required to be worn at all times. Flesh footless tights and black wraps can be worn in the cooler weather. Hair is required to be tied in a bun.
What about during school holidays?
Classes run during school holidays. Classes do not run over Easter.
Are there extra rehearsals?
As competitions draw closer, extra rehearsals will be scheduled. The girls are also given the opportunity to rehearse items on stage during a dress rehearsal, in addition to weekly classes.
Are competitions compulsory?
Crown Calisthenics College is a competitive championship club. All girls are required to compete through the competition season, which encourages a sense of team spirit and accomplishment for items taught throughout the year.
Where and when are competitions held?
Competitions are held from July to October. Depending on the section, enrolment into three – five competitions occurs. This includes the Royal South Street competition in Ballarat, which requires an overnight stay.
Will I have to make costumes?
Team work across the section ensures all costumes are completed for the girls. We draw on the various skills within the section, and most certainly are happy to further up-skill. You will be responsible for the sequinning of individual costumes, which are supported through planned workshops and individual time allocated at class. We certainly appreciate all contributions made across costuming and props.
What make-up will my daughter have to wear?
Calisthenics is an artistic sport therefore during competitions and concerts, girls are required to wear foundation, lipstick, eye-shadow, eyeliner and leg and body tan. This is varied amongst the levels.
What qualifications do the coaches have?
All our coaches are Level 1 qualified, hold First Aid Certificates and Working With Children Checks.
